TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to cut down on the quantity of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service disclosed that it now features in excess of 1 thousand million content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread launch. This shift aligns with a surge in content created by AI, fueled by new AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is deemed mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is often illogical or bizarre.
Our research shows that many people like content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to provide users the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
The service shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as artificially created. Overall, more than 100 mn videos are uploaded to the app each day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its overall inventory.
How to Adjust Settings
Users will be in a position to decrease or raise the level of AI content they watch by using the content preference setting in the platform and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be controlled under the setting encompass news, style, aesthetics, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
TikTok’s guidelines mandate content makers to identify convincing artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.
Additionally, the platform will now attach an “AI-made” label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is intended to help prevent users from seeking to evade the labeling process.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is also launching a two million dollar awareness program for experts and groups to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will support non-profit groups dedicated to educating computer science.
Moderation Strategy
TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, during controversy over proposals to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation team in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content before it has to be seen by humans. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by human moderators over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we additionally believe it’s very important to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
