One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever prevented the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the business with his partner, disclosed that he plans to personally create this new product within an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner

This latest announcement deepens the continuing tension between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

Both founders maintain how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem for Support

Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians due to its colors, that mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions

The founder stated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
