Previous Statements on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the far-right former soldier showed scant sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we give those dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Jail Destination Debate

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week inspected the complex in an apparent bid to discourage the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he expected the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal issues – the consequence of a near-fatal stabbing during the last presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the sitting leader's political party, stated: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to obtain proper treatment – but proper care in prison. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long applauding the severe conditions of inmates, had abruptly realized to their rights. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights should not be for criminals – opted to tour a jail to discover what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Potential Jail Facilities

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about thousands of detainees, his more likely destination looks to be a adjacent jail for officers and other “special” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning leader's home, around 12 miles away.
