New Foreign Policy Vision Points to Europe's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Shortfall of Racism?

Throughout his initial presidency, analysts frequently advised that the former president's remarks should be taken seriously rather than word for word. Yet, subsequent events suggest that that formula could have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy coupled with multiple comments from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and the former president have precipitated potentially one of the most profound challenges for Atlanticism, the doctrine that has underpinned stability and freedom in Europe since World War II.

From Burden-Sharing to Civilizational Fear

Whereas Trump's earlier critique focused on Europe's alleged failure to pay for its own defense, his rhetoric has now embraced a far more alarming outlook.

Colored by racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and officials, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly seen from a distance.

"His recent interview lacking in clear ideological coherence is instead full of something else: the muddled anxiety of an older man facing demographic shifts."

A conspiratorial Maga perspective, which has shaped harsh American border and policing policies, now appears to be shaping the administration's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

From this vantage point, immigration from developing nations leads to a cultural dilution of European countries, making them "feeble" under "stupid" leaders and setting the stage for their demise. This is an unabashedly racist theory, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is not new, its specific implications for European security are critically important.

In the view of the president and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the dissolution of the EU—all politics is fundamentally a deal. But, while he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is undeserving because of its shift toward diversity.

Weakening from Within

In his interview, Trump joins these ideas in a form of rhetorical loop. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe to be weak, and in exposing the rifts in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European unity—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

All of this is playing out at perhaps the most consequential moment for Europe since WWII, with a devastating war in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

As European nations draw closer to Kyiv facing continuing warnings of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

These developments demands a robust response from European leadership. Although certain leaders, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their pushback, including the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

Recently, the UK government refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on cooperating with each to deliver stronger results for the British public."

The stark reality is that Trump means what he says and says what he means repeatedly. It is past time to stop pretending otherwise.
