Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks continue
People have come together around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the terms of the plan.
A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict governance of the area
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in as payment for the release of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the area of the music event, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my little child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more dead people had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
